There is a lot of speculation as to why Stanley made a smaller equivelent of their bench planes, be it salesmen's samples or promotional freebies, but the fact remains that it is still a handy tool. The plane can be used as a palm tool or two handed like a normal bench plane. The No.1 can be very useful to get to those hard to reach areas or when you need a small plane with a higher pitch than a block plane, to plane some squirrelly wood on a fragile piece.
